Shiro Kumano (M'09) received the Ph.D. degree in information science and technology from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 2009. He is currently a Senior Research Scientist with the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Communication Science Laboratories, NTT Corporation, Kanagawa, Japan, and an honorary Research Associate with the University College London, London, U.K. His research interests include affective computing and computer vision, especially in relation to facial expression recognition and the automatic understanding of empathy. Dr. Kumano is a member of the IEEE and the IEICE. He serves/has served as a Senior Program Committee Member of International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction and ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction, and as an Organizing Committee Member of International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction and IAPR International Conference on Machine Vision Applications. He was the recipient of the ACCV 2007 Honorable Mention Award and the ICMI 2014 Outstanding Paper Award.
